Shining (Nor) + Drums Are For Parades (28.10.2010, 013, Tilburg)

The thing about festivals where you have bands playing in different rooms at the same time is that sometimes you have to make a hard choice. That was the case of last year's Roadburn when Shining and Jarboe were playing at the same time. My choice ended to be watching Swan's former singer due to the age difference between them and although I don't regret it, Shining's last album Blackjazz is so good that for some time I kept checking their myspace to see when could I finally see them live. I was quite pleased when I saw they were playing again in Tilburg at the end of October and I could finally get some live blackjazz action.

The show took place in the Green Room, which is somewhere in between the Bat Cave and the Main stage (maybe a bit closer to the Bat Cave) and there were two opening acts, namely a Dutch band called Cube X that I didn't get to see (hence not mentioning them in the title) and Belgium avant-garde/sludge/some-other-name-to-describe-what-they-do outfit Drums Are For Parades.

It so happens that this trio has one EP (Artificial Sacrificial Darkness In The Temple Of The Damned) and one album (Master) out and what they delivered in the Green Room was enough for me to get quite curious about them. Somehow their sound reminded me of Melvins and Mastodon, in the sense of having the more metal-like sounding and heaviness of Mastodon with a melvinish approach to it all. All in all they were heavy, loud and pretty much everybody was banging their heads along the instrumentals (at some point there seemed to be some singing from both one of the guitarists and the drummer but it was not listenable in the middle of it all). Portuguese promoters (and others alike): get this guys to play as an opening act to a good and intense sludge/stoner band in a very small venue, I think the effect will be brutal.

The fact that I can actually remember anything of DafP is a bit surprising, considering the awesomeness of Shining's show. Also that the Green Room was enough to pack everyone who wanted to see them (and the tickets did not sold out) is also a sign of them being relatively unknown: quite unfair considering how good they are.

The set list was, as expected, mostly consisting of their latest album Blackjazz with only two songs from Grindstone. They changed their sound a lot from their first few records so it does not come as a surprise and gave the show a stylistic consistency that worked quite well. When one mentions consistency while describing something done by Shining that should be taken with a pinch of salt, in the sense that their sound is a bit insane. When you have such a style (in this case a mixture of jazz and extreme metal) it is important to have a good sound, otherwise you easily loose a lot of stuff during the show and unfortunately it didn't start very well and even though there was some increase in the definition throughout the show, it was normally so loud that unless you would buy yourself a pair of earplugs, the distortion and bass sounds would completely drown everything else. This was a pity, considering how strong the opening song is - The Madness and The Damage Done (also the opening of Blackjazz). Nevertheless, the sheer energy of that song was overwhelming enough to overcome the sound problems and get things started in a great fashion.

If that wasn't enough, following up with Fish Eye should make sure to keep everyone happy straight from the beginning. The rest of the show alternated between the more experimental sides of songs from Grindstone and the intensity of the Blackjazz stuff, intertwined with a Munkeby in a very good mood ("Jazzmetal hour!"). The ending with Healter Skelter and their version of King Crimson's masterpiece 21st Century Schizoid Man was absolutely amazing and put the exclamation mark the show needed.

Music wise, any quick listening to their albums leaves you with no doubt: those guys are very good. But when you are playing that fast and that loud and with so many overlapping details on your songs, it can be quite hard to avoid making a mess on stage. Fortunately, the live versions were as good as the ones in the studio and just like in the Armageddon Concerto they played with Enslaved in that same building earlier this year, I have to highlight both Lofthus (drums) and Munkeby (voice, guitar and sax). The first one is one of the most precise drummers I've seen on a live show and that precision was really what held everything together. Regarding Munkeby: he is simply a great frontman with a suiting dose of insanity and a very good voice. Add to that the fact that he is switching between sax, guitar, singing and some other instrument he used that I don't know the name and you can get a glimpse of the picture.
The highlight of everything I mentioned came in the aforementioned version of 21st Century Schizoid Man. In Blackjazz, Grutle from Enslaved is in charge of the singing duties while Munkeby plays sax in the album, while in this case he was really in charge of everything, switching from screams (his voice is not as deep and brutal as Grutle's can be but he did a very good job) to crazy saxophone playing. Electric Wizard + Moss (31.10.2010, Burgerweeshuis, Deventer)

October 31, 2010. Halloween. What do we get? Two of the loudest, most intense bands to have ever stepped foot on this earth, which in this case means that the opening act was Moss - that Southampton's trio that gives new meaning to slow, loud and scary, authors of the excelent Sub Templum and Tombs of the Blind Drugged just to name two recent endeavours and who celebrated 10 years of doom in last year's Roadburn with one of the best shows of the entire weekend (I, for one, left the Green Room in complete astonishment and awe)- while the main attraction was Electric Wizard - for whom introductions are just not necessary and who were about to release their first record since the brilliant Witchcult Today.

The room was already packed to see Moss playing three songs (if my memory didn't decide to just blur some of them together) and with Moss that means at least half an hour where a wall, nah, let's go for a mammoth of a rock, just keeps crushing our heads in a not-so-pretty way. I mean, you have a guitar with the distortion plugged all the way until your body shakes with the sheer loudness and roughness of the thing, producing sick riff after sick riff while the drums keep the pace as slow as they can get, but in a cadence such that your head will still be banging for as long as the music goes. On top of that you get the insanity of Mr. Olly Pearson, whose screams are some of the most haunting things I have ever witnessed in a live show. While this was not up to the standard of the Roadburn show (then again, that would have been hard), they were still intense and loud, just what one would want from that it.

With the stage all set to go and expectations quite high (after their performance in Portugal this summer I couldn't stop wondering how much better would it all sound in a closed environment), the Wizard started their show (coincidence or not) just when Black Sabbath's Iron Man was playing in the room. And what did they started with?

That's right, funeral-fucking-apolis! To start the show with one of the most destructive and legendary stoner/doom anthems to have ever been written could have been a risky as some impact from could be taken from other songs, but it was actually rather effective and the message was clear: this will be a memorable night - and it was. Smoke was quickly covering the stage (and not only the stage, but I shall refrain from claiming that people were disobeying Dutch law), the sound was loud as hell (unlike in Portugal, where I felt it could have been louder) and to prove that they were not there to fuck around what better follow up to funeralapolis then Chosen Few? That was it, no living soul was putting up a fight, all embracing the Wizard's loud tunes of occultism and drugs, all paying homage to the dopethrone of doom, so rightfully occupied by Dorset's quartet. And before they presented two songs of Black Masses, it was indeed Dopethrone's homonym last tune that, for ten incredible minutes (preceded by Jus' clear instruction - "get high"), made heads bounce in furious synchrony. From the new record they took the excellent uptempo (for their standards) Black Mass itself and Nightchild, which sounded way better live than I could expect.

The following up to this 'faster' mood of Black Mass was two-fold: first the ritualistic Satanic Rites of Drugula prowled through the crowd who echoed back the great lines evoking count Drugula, the second, an unequivocal return to the, heaviest-band-in-the-world past in the form of Return Trip and Devils Bride. What was left of us quickly dissolved into the abyss provided by this two babies.

Finally, to end the night, nothing better than a song that screams 'hymn from its every 'pore' - Witchcult Today! Yes, Electric Wizard, your witchcult grows and with performances like this those who are not yet fanatics shall become so.

Roadburn is elated to announce that Birmingham’s seminal post-punk / industrial behemoths, Godflesh, will perform their seminal debut full-length album, 1989’s Streetcleaner, in its entirety at the 2011 Roadburn Festival, Thursday, April 14th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Not only will founding members Justin Broadrick and Benny Green play Streetcleaner in full and in track order, they will be playing the Tiny Tears EP, which was conceived as part of the overall Street Cleaner vision, in full as well.

Darkthrone - Circle The Wagons (2010)

They've done it again.

With their 15th album Darkthrone keep changing their sound ('let there be more heavy metal', they must have said) and bringing once again one of the best records of the year. Furthermore, they are beating themselves in the sense that Circle The Wagons is probably more interesting than half of their previous works. If that wasn't enough to remind you of Iron Maiden (who also released their 15th album this year and are still teaching the world how to do a classic heavy metal album) they also have maintained their mascot - again by Dennis Dread - which makes for yet another awesome cover.

Sound wise, they kick things off with something that probably will shock any black metal purists that still follow them (as if they haven't been scared away by their previous punk/heavy/speed whatever influenced records): there are clean vocals! Ok, there was something remotely clean in The Winds They Call The Dungeon Shaker, but nothing to this extent. And I for one, am quite glad for this addition. It's not like they are great singers or anything like that or that the clean parts will take away for the raw feeling they still have after more then 20 years, it just gives an epic twist to the music and also for that, Those Treasures Will Never Befall You has to go down as one of the best openers in their history (or at least the latest stages of it if you feel it is a blasphemy of some sort to compare this stuff to Transilvanian Hunger, which I think is not).

So, besides adding clean vocals here and there what did they do on Circle The Wagons? They continued to go down the same road they took in The Cult Is Alive and persisted in F.O.A.D. and Dark Thrones and Black Flags, maybe with a little more of classic heavy metal (not only on the vocal side), something that they had actually hinted for in plenty of interviews when previewing this record and therefore not much of a surprise. Regarding their riff-producing abilities, they remain intact and seem to get refined with age. Just listen to the track Eyes Burst at Dawn - that has it all (and to think that in the last records I used to prefer Fenriz's tracks to Culto's, this one comes as a good surprise). Do they still complain about modern metal? Switch to the Fenriz-is-ranting opus of the day - I am the Graves of the 80's - somewhere between grim and epic with "I am the graves of the 80s / I am the risen dead / destroy their modern metal / and bang your fucking head / Uh!" as a chorus. You also have the short and sweet title track that will make you sing along plenty of times.

I still maintain the stand I made when reviewing their previous records - this fuck off and die attitude fits their career from beginning to the end. The same reasons that made them idols in the black metal movement still apply today and I will add more - in that sense, they probably have the most consistent, albeit not repetitive in the slightest bit, career of that whole bunch of early Norwegian black metal bands.
In their case, I think the comparison with another band would have to be with Iron Maiden (keeping of course in mind the monstrous difference between the audience range and importance of one and the other): after such a long time either one or the other is one of the most interesting metal bands around and every time they decide to put out something new, odds are it will be great stuff once again.

Circle The Wagons is one of those cases. Grab a beer and enjoy!

Sathanas in Gloriam IV: Occult Lunar Incantations (2.10.2010-3.10.2010, Baroeg, Rotterdam)

During this past weekend a Sathanas in Gloriam Productions fest took place in Baroeg, Rotterdam. Due to schedule limitations on my part it was watch the first shows on each day. Nevertheless, it was still possible to watch all the main attractions and the result was one of a good festival, well organized, with a overall good sound on most shows and only a few minor delays. The bill had sufficient variety (considering it was supposed to be only black metal bands) and undeniable quality.

As for the first day, I still managed to watch the end of Kjeld (a Dutch band) which seemed (and I stress that this is only the impression I got from a few songs) to be more form than substance.

Therefore, the first show for me was Acherontas, a Greek band that was one of the finest surprises of the weekend. The songs varied enough from fast-paced and ferocious blast beat supported riffs (which, fortunately were not that many, since they consisted the more generic parts) to some more atmospheric and mid-tempo passages, with good melodies and a nice voice to top it up. What really surprised me was that, while using pretty much standard black metal elements, the atmospheres and melodies were done in a quite personal way. Songs like Conjuration of The Five Negatives and Pestilence of Mortality were some of the highlights of a performance that was unfortunately cut short due to a problem in the drum-set. After them, the first two-man band of the night and one of the best shows of the weekend.

I am talking about The One (there is no official myspace as far as I know). The first thing that comes about in their show is the huge wall of sound that is coming from that guitar. Putting that with a very eerie and atmospheric sound, a stage filled with smoke and some cleaner and distant voices and you can get an idea of what it was - intense and loud. By the time they finished, at the silencing of the amplifier and the vanishing of the smoke, you had the idea of waking up from some dark slumber.

Before the main point of interest of the night, that being Urfaust, Throne of Katarsis played. I have to say I don't really get why they got so many people to watch them. It was plain and generic black metal with a scenery (as in corpse paint, fake or true blood and some ridiculous chants) that instead of creating something impressive just made it look like a circus.

In contrast, the stage seemed completely naked for Urfaust. No corpse paint, no blast beats, no big fuss. The music is as simple as it gets, the drumming is usually slow paced and distant and the vocals are some of the most unique and excellent I've ever found in black metal. The surprising thing was that what you get on an album is perfectly transposed to a live setting. My best expectations on IX's voice were immediately proved to be enormous understatements as I was constantly creeped out and having goosebumps, such was the haunting effect of it. Overall, it shows that you don't need a circus (and I am repeating the word on purpose) if you have enough feeling and songs which are good enough to get your audience hypnotized. Visual issues apart, for those who that have a special thing for their latest EP, Einsiedler, they did play the second song from it - Verderber (also a couple of excellent tracks from Geist ist Teufel).
They proved to be the perfect ending for the day and this show alone would made it worthwhile. When you also get the two Greek acts (Acherontas and The One) on top of it, it makes for a great day.

On the second day, I started with Mortifera.

Sound-wise, it was awesome and the atmosphere was all there. When it comes to the visual part, there were high and low points. When the lightning was properly set up (as in coming almost exclusively behind the band) and the necessary amount of smoke was filling the stage it was perfect, had it been the whole show like this and it would have been the been the best concert of the fest with Urfaust. However, there were lots of times where the lightning and smoke just didn't adjust to the sounds and the fact that Noktu is not a stage animal also helped. That fact became irrelevant when he was either singing (such feeling) or when the lightning was right, but otherwise became a bit odd. In terms of set list, we got A Last Breath Before Extinction and that is all that I need to say.

The following was Ondskapt who had (as far as the bands I saw are concerned) by far the worst sound of the festival. On purpose or not, their riffs are too good to be that loud and at some points it was just a big mess. Sound problems apart, it was complete devastation from beginning to the end, with songs from every release of the band (EP included).

I would personally do without some of the visual circus on stage but I guess that's just a personal view. At least the music kind of matched the intensity of the disguises which makes it a bit more coherent. We can judge the performance of Sargeist along more or less the same lines: less brutal and more melodic (and with a very good sound) but with the same devastating and face-paced attitude and visual effects, so to speak. The set also included a song - empire of suffering - from the upcoming album, Let the Devil In, which promises more of the same: good furious black metal - not a big revolution but well done stuff.

Summing up the second day, while not being as good as the first one (but then again, it would have been almost impossible for any of this bands to top up Urfaust's performance on the previous day), was quite balanced and the sequence starting with the atmospheric black of Mortifera and ending with the ferocity of Ondskapt and Sargeist mas good enough to send everyone home satisfied.

An update about [BeforeTheRain]'s new record, Frail, was posted one the band's website.
Their previous record (One Day Less...) is, in its own right, one of the most interesting portuguese doom records that I can recall, which brings quite high hopes for this one. The new song, posted on their myspace (see below), indeed hints in the direction that the band claims - a more mature sound and an excellent production to match it.

Now we only have to wait for it.

BEFORE THE RAIN have set "Frail" as the title of their new album, which was recorded at Fabrica de Som in Oporto, Portugal by sound engineer Nuno Maciel and produced by Valter Cunha. The highly anticipated follow-up to 2007's "One Day Less..." was mixed at Chapel Studios (MY DYING BRIDE, CATHEDRAL) in Lincolnshire, England by Ewan Davies (ANATHEMA) & Valter Cunha, mastered at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden by Jens Bogren (KATATONIA, PARADISE LOST) and includes Natalie Koskinen (SHAPE OF DESPAIR) and Peter Bjärgö (ARCANA) as guest singers.

"Frail" brings a more mature sound from the band with a revamped line-up including new members Gary Griffth (ex MORGION), Carlos Monteiro (ex SCULPTURE) and Joaquim Aires (ex DISAFFECTED).

Commented the band: "With this release we really found our voice, "Frail" is a much broader sonic journey than anything we have done before. Expect thunderous waves and haunting melodies".

BEFORE THE RAIN are currently negotiating the release of the album with selected labels and they plan to tour Europe once it's released.

In other news the band have scheduled a split 7" with Finnish doomsters "SHAPE OF DESPAIR". The split will include a unreleased song from each band, and is aimed for a late 2010 release through Major Label Industries.

Celeste - Morte(s) Nee(s) (2010)

Never has french sounded so aggressive and lacerating as it does in Celeste's music. Not that this is any piece of news, as that was already present in Nihiliste(s) and Misantrhope(s), but it's always nice to see that it remains so in Morte(s) Nee(s) (which means born-dead or something along those lines).
That dirty combination of black metal, hardcore and sludge is still alive with occasional decelerations worthy of a doom record, but I do not feel a repetition (or recycling) of a formula, instead, it gives the idea of a band that is calmly developing their sound along very well defined lines, without a need to do a sudden break up with the past but also without stagnation. In that way, Morte(s) Nee(s) is an album a la Celeste (if such an expression is allowed on their third full lenght), crushing music which develops itself along foul, muddy and desperate lines and which is presented without any particular form of leniency.
If one is to speak of any innovation, that has to lie in the reinforcement of their slow and atmospheric tendencies. To properly illustrate this, there is the fifth track of the record (which happens to be an instrumental), simply named (S), where methodically placed chords fill the air and create an ambiance of smothering sickness. When that track ends, one might find himself thinking that after such a gloomy mood, there will be some kind of rest of release, but Celeste is not about giving solutions or mere glimpses of beauty of hope - he will find none of those. The next track, "Un Miroir pur qui te Rend Misérable", starts immediately after (S) ends, and it's a 6 minute rampaging feast of blind loathe.
This sequence, brings us to another highlight of the album: it works as such (I, for instance, seldom recall a particular track but seem to be able to revive the album, as a whole, in my head), the tracks follow each other in a quite natural way, as if feeding from one another to create a monster of an album that goes by the name of Morte(s) Nee(s).

ISIS has reached an end. It's hard to try to say it in any delicate way, and it is a truth that is best spoken plainly. This end isn't something that occurred over night and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band. Simply put, ISIS has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say. In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close. We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure ISIS would never fall victim to that syndrome. We've had a much longer run than we ever expected we would and accomplished a great deal more than we ever imagined possible. We never set any specific goals when the band was founded other than to make the music we wanted to hear and to play (and to stay true to that ideal), so everything else that has come along the long and winding path has been an absolute gift. As with any momentous life-changing decision (which this certainly is for the 5 of us), we feel a very dynamic range of emotions about this and cannot express all of it within the space of a few sentences, and perhaps it's best to do what we've always done in and let our music speak for us. It is and has been the truest expression of who we are as a collective and in some ways who we are as individuals for the 13 years in which we've been together. The last and perhaps most important thing we might say in relation to all this is how grateful we are for the people that have supported us over the years. It is a lengthy list that would include those who put out our records, those that played on them and put them to tape, the many bands with whom we shared the stage, all of our family, friends and companions who supported us in our individual lives and thus made it possible for us to continue on in the band, and most importantly those who truly listened to our music whether in recorded form or by coming to out to our shows (or both). It is quite true that we would never have done what we have without those people, that is many of you who are reading this. Our words can never fully express what we feel, but we hope that our music and the efforts made to bring it into being can serve as a more proper expression of gratitude for this life and for everyone in it. Thank you.

In more immediate and practical terms the tour we are about to embark upon is indeed our last. We are hoping that these final live rituals can help us bring a close to the life of this band in a celebratory and reverent way, and also provide us with a chance to say goodbye to many of those that have supported us over the years. While there is a measure of sadness that comes with the passing of this band, we hope that the final days can be joyous ones during which any and all that wish to come and join us will do so. It seems fitting that the last show of the tour and of our active existence will take place in Montreal, the site of the very first ISIS show in 1997 (though that was an unintentional move when booking the show initially). After the tour we also plan to follow through with other projects set in motion some time ago - pursuing the completion of a final EP, compiling live audio and visual material for future releases, and generally doing whatever we can to make our music available for as long as there are people who wish to hear it. Solefald, Sturmgeist and other notes

Periodically, I get hooked on a Solefald album and consume it furiously for a few days until it gets assimilated and part of my regular playlist.
This last month Neonism was the victim of choice and in one of those days I ended up trying to find out news about the new Solefald record (which apparently will come out this year) and ended up discovering Cornelius' side project - Sturmgeist (one of them anyway).
I already posted a video from on of their songs, Unknown Soldier a while ago and if that was the only thing you heard from them, then you only know the tip of the iceberg. Actually, that maybe the most 'different' song I could've posted for it doesn't reflect the style of any of the albums.
Just like in Solefald, talking about a 'Sturmgeist sound' is not that easy: from Über to Manifesto Futurista they went from a more german-like thrashy/industrial (wow, so many adjectives) approach to a more traditional black metal one. On another way, it still sounds like Sturmgeist, i.e., it still sounds like Cornelius.
The good part was that, unlike Solefald, Sturmgeist used to play live every once in a while. As the previous sentence just hinted, it will not happen anymore. Precisely one week ago Sturmgeist ceased to exist. The reasons are explained in Cornelius' text and the stories behind it can also be understood in other blog entries on Sturmgeist's myspace page.

It is a sad piece of news for me and it is sad that events such as the ones that happened in Finland in 2007 took place and contributed to the end of a musical project.

Chegou-me na semana passada às mãos o mais recente álbum dos Across Tundras: Old World Wanderer. Há uns tempos já tinha tido oportunidade de ouvir as músicas unmastered no myspace, e portanto sabia que vinha aí coisa boa.

Em termos de produção é sem dúvida o melhor, e julgo que este será um passo importante para obterem mais notoriedade. Das sete faixas, duas já constavam na demo herds of the fathomless valleys, e é ao comparar as duas versões que a melhoria é mais gritante.
Ajudado pela questão da produção, este é também o disco que flui melhor. Para mim, o Western Sky Ride vai ser sempre aquela masterpiece com músicas geniais, mas confesso que foi complicado inicialmente ultrapassar a uma hora e oito minutos que compunham o álbum.

Em termos de sonoridade continuam a seguir o seu caminho, mas nunca caem no erro de se tornar repetitivos. Todas as músicas aqui são bastante fortes, e então a última (Rainmaker - Floodreaper) é um monumento, cujo único defeito é ser demasiado curta. O efeito da guitarra para parecer uma sitar é...tão bom.

Os Viaje A 800 têm nova música no seu myspace - Oculi Ómnium In Te Spérant, Dómine (Demo) - e está o rock, ou não fossem, para mim, uma das bandas mais interessantes (a par com Orthodox) a sair do país vizinho. Pode ser impressão minha (ou efeitos semelhantes a enganarem-me), mas parece-me ouvir a voz do Marco de Orthodox ali por volta dos 2:46. Uma vez que as duas bandas já partilharam o palco várias vezes não seria uma grande surpresa.
É uma pena só tocarem no Afterburner do Roadburn, já que não comprei bilhete para esse dia... para quando uma visitinha a portugal?

Bem, parece que a Eisenwald se preparou em grande para este ano de 2010. Há uma semana atrás dei-vos a conhecer Grey Waters, que lançou o EP de estreia pela mencionada editora. Felizmente, a Eisenwald não se fica por aí e decidiu brindar-nos com mais duas pérolas que acredito que irão agradar a alguns dos leitores deste blog.

A primeira surpresa dá-se pelo nome de Whirling e aposto o esquerdo em como os fãs de Ved Buens Ende, Virus,

 Code (com <>) e Bergraven irão molhar as cuecas quando puserem os ouvidos neste álbum de estreia de nome "Faceless Phenomena". Afinal de contas, a banda é constituída pelo que parece ser o reconhecido como pertencente ao último line-up conhecido dos respeitados Armagedda, também reconhecidos pelo seu recomendável rock oculto e negativo destilado durante três álbuns através do projecto LIK. Para além do mais, são nada mais nada menos que a parelha que constitui a seguinte recomendação. De notar que Pär Gustafsson, mestre por detrás de Bergraven, fez os vocais mais agrestes para este álbum que conta também com um tal Johdet a fazer as cordas que dão uma atmosfera ainda mais obscura e sinistra a este já de si algo soturno lançamento de estreia.

Lönndom como já disse, é outro projecto de S. Sandström e A. Pettersson que me parece ser a continuação mais óbvia daquilo que já se testemunhava em LIK, embora de um modo sub-reptício. As melodias acústicas são incrivelmente envolventes, mas desta vez encontram-se desenvolvidas de um modo mais complexo e de tal modo natural que dá a impressão de ser o companheiro perfeito para um passeio na floresta, embora eu ainda não o tenha de facto testado. Claro que os fãs de neo-folk irão adorar este projecto, mas desconfio que os fãs de black metal de tendências mais naturalistas como WITTR, Fauna ou até mesmo Agalloch não vão sentir-se desiludidos com a música oferecida em "Viddernas tolv kapitel". Antes deste álbum existe um outro longa-duração e um EP que apesar de não ter ouvido, tenho um feeling de que serão certamente de qualidade equivalente, mas de qualquer modo no MySpace podem sempre dar uma escuta num tema pertencente ao primeiro álbum que é sem dúvida alguma algo de fabuloso.

Grey Waters

Grey Waters é o projecto paralelo do multifacetado Tim "Sorrow" e D., ambos conhecidos pelo público em geral como sendo os actuais músicos de Woods of Desolation (banda interessante) e que juntamente com Desolate perfazem o trio constituinte da banda Austere, projecto orgásmico para os seguidores e apreciadores de DSBM, que impulsionou bastante este sub-género de black metal que actualmente tem uma conotação mais negativa que positiva. Desvios à parte, Grey Waters parece à partida (pelo menos a mim parecia-me e ainda nem sequer tinha posto os ouvidos na música) mais um desses milhentos projectos que agora despontam como cogumelos que acharam de repente que era giro juntar Joy Division e black metal, depois de terem ouvido as cenas de Amesoeurs (Frail/Crooked Necks, Hateful Abandon, Lifelover). Felizmente estava errado e Grey Waters é um pouco diferente de tudo isso em termos sonoros, embora o ambiente nos remeta para locais igualmente mortiços e deprimentes e, honestamente, nem sei bem se poderei chamar isto de metal, tal é a falta de elementos que enquadrem esta sonoridade no vulgar "metal". Tentando descrever a sonoridade de Grey Waters por palavras, seria algo como "Jesu acelerado para o triplo da velocidade, misturado com Lifelover um bocadinho menos degradante, apoiado em bases post-rockeiras não muito elaboradas, com coros evocativos e finais diria quase épicos, dignos de um colapso social galvanizado por uma apatia galopante, inerente à vivência prolongada num ambiente citadino". Para evitarem terem que ler mais um parágrafo de verborreia, carreguem no link colocado em baixo e oiçam a "Below the Ever Setting Sun":

Ulver + Void Ov Voices (12-02-2010, 013, Tilburg)

First Ulver tour EVER. The title couldn't be any different (the picture is small, but it reads "What Happened To Us Here?").
Really, one year ago I wouldn't dream of seeing them live. Last May I had the privilege of reviewing their first live show in over 15 years, now I get the chance of being able to review another show and actually compare them. This is awesome.
With expectations quite high after their first show, where a lot of stage rust and lack of confidence were noticeable, the venue couldn't be better - the mythical 013 in Tilburg, home of Roadburn festival. All the praises I had read about the room were quite justifiable, the sound was great and that allowed the band to play a little with the dynamics of their songs, highlighting the stronger parts with a louder sound.

The opening act was Void Ov Voices, the new toy of Attila Csihar. Being a fan of his work both with Mayhem and Sunn O))), I didn't think VoV would make a household name. On the other hand, viewing the opening act as a short performance that should just set the mood for what's coming, then VoV play their role perfectly.
Picture a stage with little to no lightning. In the middle of it there is a small pulpit, behind which a dark cloaked figure has a microphone in its hand. Simple and ritualistic. What you're in for is a session of overlapping vocal sounds, ranging from haunting choir-like sounds to screams and growls, developing in such a succession that the whole thing felt like a quite bleak and dark mass.

After a short intermission, Ulver go on stage. They start with two pieces from Shadows of The Sun, eventually moving on to older things. Two songs from perdition city - Hallways of Always (amazing) and Porn Piece or The Scars of Cold Kisses and three from Blood Inside (if my memory is not playing tricks on me), namely In The Red (jazzy section with a fuckin loud bass included), Operator and For The Love of God. Still no sign of It Is Not Sound.
Just like in Lillehammer, we were presented with a stage full of musicians dimly illuminated and live visuals that were quite intense at times. Also like in Lillehammer, they merged Little Blue Birds (from A Quick Fix of Melancholy) with Rock Massif (from Svid Neger) and the result was even more impressing than before. When the first song gave rise to the growing intensity of the second and the diving man gave rise to images of World War II rallies, refugee camps and so on, the sound increased in a drastic fashion without any kind of distortion, leaving all the sounds still distinguishable and providing for an atmosphere which was not that easy to digest. When it was over, a room erupted with cheers. Few words said by Garm about what we had just witnessed - 'the evil of the world'.
It was still only one hour, but the performance was almost perfect. They keep evolving and I think the story is not yet completely told, for they've only been playing live for (almost) one year now and the evolution is already out there to be seen.

Just like 2009, 2010 starts with a blast.
Last year Zu blew our heads away with their first ever fully written album, Carboniferous, an insane take on avant-garde done on bass, drums and sax. This year, Ihsahn releases his third solo album which promises to leave few indifferent.
If on one hand one can argue that a man with a discography such as his as nothing to prove, the truth is that neither The Adversary nor Angl (the two previous efforts) were quite a match for his early works with Emperor (albeit being very good).
As Dr. Farnsworth would say, "Good news everyone!", Ihsahn has just released his best solo album so far, one that can rise to the excellence standards created by Emperor's discography. 'After' balances perfectly both sides of his previous works, presenting a much more mature progressive side with a bunch of brutality (let's not forget that in this field he is as good as it gets).
So, besides being more mature what's the big difference between 'After' and its predecessors? I, for one, think that it is more diverse and that the addiction of the sax, courtesy of Mr. Jørgen Munkeby from Shining (the Norwegian Shining, not the Swedish one), takes the music to another level.
The first example comes right on the second track, A Grave Inversed. When I picked up the album, having read that there was a sax on it could not prepare me to those insane bridges on this song. Perfectly composed, as always, you just have to wait until 1:50 in the song to understand what I mean: the balance between the saxophone, Ihsahn's unique screaming and the guitar melodies created by the man himself provide for great music.
But not only from the more extreme (while non-black metal) side of his mind lives the album. Frozen Lakes on Mars is a very interesting showcase of a more progressive side, filled with great melodies/solos and some quite good pieces of singing. Said qualities play quite a big role in the initial minutes of Undercurrent, laying out the mood for the longer song while not being the song itself. There is still room to introduce both heavier moods and the amazing saxophone sound.
In conclusion I think that this last point holds the key to the greatness of this album: neither brutality nor experimentalism or even the sense of melody are ends by themselves but tools brilliantly used by Ihsahn to create great music.
And great music is what he (once again) delivers in 'After'.

Well, this post is quite a bit overdue but here it goes.
I had already mentioned some of the albums which I think really stood out last year (namely the works by Alice in Chains, Process of Guilt, Eagle Twin, Brutal Truth and Kylesa) so I guess it's time I finish it:

Let's start with Mastodon's 4th studio album - Crack The Skye.

With their last two albums (Leviathan and Blood Mountain) Mastodon were always receiving awards for album of the year or similar in metal magazines. I know that in a universe where underground music is very praised and mainstream is a little bit hated they might seem like the new fashion band, but I think those guys really deserved all the praise they got. The same holds for this album, which lives up to all the expectations and then some more.
Truth be told, they changed quite a bit for this one, pointing to a more 'progressive' and 'melodic' way to present their sound. But all things considered, I would say that all those characteristics that made Mastodon so good are still there, just tackled from a different perspective.

Moving on to sloooowwer territories with Stabat Mater self titled.

This one has to be one of the finest (funeral) doom releases of the year, if not the finest.
A masterpiece of slowness highlighted with a 20 minute long epic last song which is terrifyingly beautiful. A detailed review was done by Pedro Silva (the review was the reason I picked it up in the first place) here.

Also on the doom spectrum, I have to say I was kind of disappointed by Ahab's and Mournful Congregation's outputs this year. On the other hand, the return of YOB with The Great Cessation was very good. And of course, there is Orthodox with Sentencia, which I have reviewed here.
Finally, I found Furva Ambiguitas, a Russian funeral doom band with some black metal scent on it. Their debut, In Articulo Mortis is quite enjoyable, specially in rainy and gray weekend afternoons (which seem to occur quite often in the Netherlands).

Speaking of gray afternoons, another perfect match would be The Dead End, from Abandon. When it comes to an emotional performance you don't need to go much further. Great album (and great cover as well).

From the realms of post and progressive rock, I think the name that really stood out was Crippled Black Phoenix.
This guys released not one but two (!) huge albums - Night Raider and The Resurrectionists. Having the super-band stigma, one could have the tendency to compare the sound of this guys to Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey and Mogway but this is something else.

Going even softer, Soulsavers also had a new record, Broken, which I think is a considerable step forward from It's not how far you fall, it's the way you land. Besides playing very good music, they lined up (again) one of today's best rock (maybe rock is not the most fortunate expression, but I'll settle for it), Mark Lanegan, whose work here is not short from amazing.

On a more experimental side, the year started straight ahead with its winner, in the form of the Italian trio called ZU. Susana discussed it here.

And now, black metal.
It was quite a good year, we witnessed the return of Blut Aus Nord with Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue With the Stars, where they seemed to incorporate all the years of experiments in their old sound, resulting in one of their best works to date (and that's saying something). Another band which 2009's record surpassed (in my opinion) its antecessors was Cobalt, with Gin.

On the post of the returned bands I forgot to mention one that occurred so early in the year that I forgot it was from 2009 and not 2008 and that's Absu with the self titled black thrash bomb, which was heavily listened to here while on the road to SWR.
Still from the USA, Wolves in the Throne Room gave us more evidence (as if it was needed) that they are a force to be reckon with. Black Cascade is a statement of its own right and songs such as Ahrimanic Trance are compulsory.
On a more atmospheric/experimental side, Bergraven's Till Makabert Väsen and Altar of Plagues' White Tomb are my choices as of 2009 top records.

And as I said before, this seemed to be a period where a lot of great musicians decided to get together and form new projects. The results are quite good in my opinion. Shrinebuilder's debut was a lesson on stoner doom delivered by four experts of the area and in the meanwhile Mr. Cisneros also released another excellent piece with OM, named God is Good. Not only that but as Khanate released its final breath in the form of the sick and disturbed Clean Hands Go Foul, Alan Dublin debuted Gnaw with an ugly wall of sound called This Face while Plotkin and Wyskid joined forces with Aaron Turner in Jodis, whose debut entitled Secret House is one of the best drone albums of 2009. Aaron Turner himself decided that releasing Wavering Radiant with Isis and Secret House with Jodis was not enough, so we got lucky again and received (were demolished by is more accurate) a present in the form of Greymachine's Disconnected. With all this projects leaving up to the expectations and managing to deliver more than just a mix from their members other projects I can only say we got lucky.

I'll end this discussion with the record that stood out the most this year: Sunn O))) - Monoliths and Dimensions

This one is such a personal preference that it's very hard to describe. Besides that, the live 'interpretation' they did on the tour took it to another level.
It has it all, from crushing distortions, new sounds (e.g. Big Church), a very inspired performance by Mr. Attila and probably the best song written by the duo (Alice).
The temptation of comparing it with previous records is huge, but I think they are not comparable. Still, the composition seems somewhat more mature, more complete on Monoliths than on previous records.
It is an album that I would heavily recommend to be listened to in isolation with either a very loud (and good) sound system or headphones. The atmospheres created on this album are almost palpable, such is their intensity. Words like dark, asphyxiating and haunting might pop up in your head while this goes on. On the other hand, Alice finishes the album in a completely different fashion, almost as if they're releasing the listener from the bleak monster they created. Not only that, but the way they do it and the effect they manage to create it's truly remarkable.
As plenty of people said after their shows, you feel clean after this ride, almost like any sort of dirtiness has been washed away by the immensity of the music contained here.

Beard]+. was formed by mutual acquaintances Hømmønnørd and Grarkzklørge in late 2009. The noise this duo created appeared to be a bizarre mix of doom metal, drone and noise, and the duo also implemented the use of some unconventional instruments such as the theremin and a plethora of circuit-bent children's toys. Hømmønnørd and Grarkzklørge soon felt that their music should be released into the world and thus their debut album 'Basement' was made available on January 4th 2010. Beard]+. are currently considering releasing further material aswell as performing a few select live shows.

É por continuar a encontrar pérolas como esta que ouço música nova quase todos os dias.

Apesar da má produção (não recomendo a ninguém ouvir este álbum com auscultadores, o feedback às vezes descontrola-se - eu fi-lo mais do que uma vez e às vezes parecia que me estavam a espetar agulhas no cérebro), esta é daquelas peças únicas na música....ultrapassem o mau som. Agora parece inacreditável, mas das primeiras 3 ou 4 vezes nem dei pelo feedback, de tal modo fui apanhada de surpresa com a qualidade das composições... só passado algum tempo é que comecei a notar e a pensar "isto é realmente desagradável". O resto nem me incomoda, dá-lhe um som cozy.
Se o nome Van Vadermark (mentor do projecto) não vos diz nada, talvez Aluk Todolo já não seja um nome assim tão desconhecido. Pois é, é um dos membros de Aluk Todolo.

Ando a tentar escrever uma crítica há 7 meses, mas parece que me faltam as palavras. Quando estou a ouvir um álbum de black metal e há músicas que me fazem lembrar Acid Bath (don't ask, deve ser um desarranjo cerebral, mas para mim a segunda faixa tem momentos que podiam ser de uma música de Acid Bath), fico sem saber bem o que dizer.

O que interessa aqui é a enorme criatividade em todas as músicas, os riffs e melodias, as variâncias da voz....podia ter um som 3x pior que ia continuar a ser, imho, um dos álbuns mais interessantes que já ouvi dentro do black metal. Pode-se dizer que se assemelha a alguns momentos de Ved Buens Ende, mas nunca é algo chapado...

«And so it was with great excitement and expectation that music-news arrived at the rather swanky Metropolis recording Studios in East London. The excitement was reserved of course for the first listen of the new Steve Wilson album. The man behind (and in front of) Porcupine Tree, Blackfield and No-Man who helped Mikeal Akerfelt create some of Opeth’s most potent creations.

After a short chat and some much needed (and surprisingly tasty) food (and beer) we lucky few were guided through a door to a room with a view. Of five or six rather menacing looking speakers. Two minutes later 'Insurgentes' was unleashed on our senses.

Opener 'Harmony Korine' introduced itself with a gentle flourish of chiming guitars before very suddenly pulling the carpet right from under you with a weighty wall of sound intertwined with an effortlessly beautiful vocal melody. It’s a bit like being hit in the face with a twelve-ton hammer son. It will blow your mind. To pieces. 'Harmony Korine' is the most immediate song here, an anthem that will immediately gratify. It’s blend of haunting melody and fuzzed out guitars laden with subtle menace sets the standard of things that follow. But it won’t prepare you. Oh no.

The industrial sounds of 'Abandoner' follow before 'Salvaging', a hefty eight minutes of dense droning guitars and swirling synth’s makes its mark on your eardrums, leaving you exhausted emotionally as it inexorably powers on like a steamroller through your brain. 'Salvaging', in turn, make’s way for the hauntingly sublime shoegaze of 'Veneno Para Las Hadas' with its understated strings and piano. It is a gentle respite from the intensity of what has gone before. Alas the preposterously titled doom prog epic 'No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun' soon drags you back (somewhat willingly) through the emotional ringer with a swirling melange of psychotic solo’s, mournful rhythms and the kind of tricksy, face melting beat we are more used to hearing from an otherwise low key Gavin Harrison.

A major highlight of the album has to be Significant Other. With help from the otherworldly vocals of Clodagh Simmonds, Steve has created one of his most memorable choruses. It’s a stunning piece of melodic doom rock that will own your attention from start to finish.

Even in the latter half when other albums would tail off 'Insurgentes' engages us head on with some inspired musicianship. The haunting instrumental of 'Twilight Coda' with its jazzy piano lines, the slow burning melody riddled monster 'Get All You Deserve' and the piano led minutes of the title (and final) song itself all. Utterly. Convince.

As a whole the album is overwhelming. After listening to 'Insurgentes' all the way through you feel quite exhausted and rising from our seats it felt like a trance had been lifted. It is an intense, diverse and intelligent album. Subtler in texture and extravagance than PT yet still retaining an incredible dominance over all who listen, 'Insurgentes' has sent the benchmark for 2009.»

Depois de ouvir o álbum inúmeras vezes, com colunas manhosas, headphones, no carro, só por altura da passagem de ano é que tive a oportunidade de - finalmente - vivê-lo como deve ser: com o DVD audio 5.1. E que experiência... Nunca me tinha sentido tão cansado emocionalmente depois de ouvir um álbum, nunca me tinha sentido tão dentro da música, tão perdido num fantástico débito sonoro com camadas e camadas de novos sons e detalhes, tão deslumbrado com o trabalho de produção. É que se há CDs deliciosos por estarem bem produzidos, o que raio é que se pode dizer deste?! Aperceber-me das potencialidades de um DVD-A foi chocante. De repente tudo o resto parece simples ou pobre.

Intriga-me a não publicidade, porque é sem dúvida um marco na história do rock. Para os mais cépticos que gostam de nomes que chamem a atenção e o do Steven Wilson não seja suficiente, cá vai o resto do elenco: Gavin Harrison, Theo Travis, Sand Snowman, Dirk Serries, Jordan Rudess, Mike Outram, Tony Levin, Clodagh Simmonds, Susana Moyaho, Michiyo Yagi e, claro, o John Wesley a ajudar na gravação de algumas guitarras.

Se há álbum que me marcou o ano de 2009 e a última década e a minha vida, foi este. E, para acabar, nada melhor que deixar aqui o single e os créditos que aparecem na penúltima música, Get All You Deserve:

Arizmenda é a minha última grande descoberta de 2009 e infelizmente só vim a tempo de anunciá-la já em 2010. Banda desconhecida mesmo entre os círculos mais discretos do black metal, Arizmenda começa cedo a construir uma reputação de bases fortes, graças a um álbum que em princípio passará despercebido até mesmo aos mais curiosos, apesar da sua qualidade monstruosa. Este álbum, que é único trabalho lançado até hoje pela banda, tem o nome de "Within the Vacuum of Infinity..." e apresenta-se como uma tempestade apocalíptica em que a fúria visceral do black metal mais enraivecido se constrói apoiando-se numa estrutura com tendências para crescer através da justaposição de texturas e nos progressivos crescendos que dão um ímpeto imparável a cada uma das seis faixas que compõem este álbum de estreia. Riffs gélidos e galopantes com incrível profundidade espacial explodem lado a lado com dedilhados soturnos que tocam no fundo da alma e com acordes de brilho celestial que se perdem por entre o vácuo intergaláctico; os gritos que acompanham esta experiência remetem-nos para o sofrimento de uma pessoa perdida num mundo que marcha incansavelmente para a sua perdição, à medida que vai sendo sugada pela singularidade em que este se tornou; e a portentosa bateria marca o passo da marcha para a morte, em diferentes tempos e ritmos, enquanto nos atinge impiedosamente como que para nos manter acordados e nos lembrar de que isto não é de todo um pesadelo de onde vamos escapar impunes. ...and I'm obviously talking about Brutal Truth and Alice in Chains.

The first ones return after more than 10 years of absence and the result is a record that, while not being just a repetition of their old stuff, can stand proud alongside older records such as Need to Control and Sounds of The Animal Kingdom. Lyrically speaking, they remain where they were, corrosive and politically aware, as one can see in the very explicit ‘get a therapist, spare the world’.
Highly recommended, even for those who, like me, don't have grindcore as their favourite genre.

The other return is, at least for me, completely unexpected and at the beginning it was not received without fear and loathing. I still decided to listen to it, after all AiC was my favorite ‘grunge’ band, and was blown away by what I was presented with. Not that it is a better album than the previous ones, but they managed to comeback (and let’s put it clear: to come back after what happened takes guts) with an album that lives up to the hype and that manages to continue to develop their sound without departing radically from the sound they created.
What I said about ‘Dirt’ still stands: this is the grunge band of the huge riffs and Cantrell doesn’t let us down in Black Gives Way to Blue.
On a quick note, the new singer DuVall really blends in well, since his singing style is very similar to Layne’s, but the presence of the deceased singer is still felt in the form of tributes.
The album starts with:

Just beautiful. The kings of grunge are back.

Process of Guilt's Erosion has already been discussed here and here so I'll just go to a few extra considerations in this reference.
It has been some time since I first picked up the album and it doesn't get old. Process of Guilt really managed to put up not just a bunch of great songs but an amazing album, which is not exactly the same thing. It is also interesting to note that, according to some interviews given by the band, that was precisely the point - to get the songs to flow with a uniqueness that was not present in previous records. Not only that, they’ve crafted a sound that is very easily identified and expanded their horizons in ways that makes the labeling of their sound harder for critics.
Looking back at the past decade of Portuguese metal this one is the perfect closing and probably its highest achievement.

EPs/Demos de 2009

Enquanto não me decido em relação aos álbuns de 2009, decidi fazer uma lista de EPs/Demos que ombreiam perfeitamente com qualquer bom disco de 2009 e só ficam nesta lista à parte para me facilitar o trabalho.

1. Neige et Noirceur - Philosophie des Arts Occultes

Neige et Noirceur é um projeto de ambient black metal, e esta foi a primeira vez que comprei um disco digital. Ao passear pelo site da Alien8 o nome chamou-me a atenção e decidi comprar por 4,99$, sabendo sobre o projecto apenas o que tinha lido no site. Saíram mais dois lançamentos este ano mas ainda não tive oportunidade de ouvir (sendo que o outro EP foge ao som "tradicional" do projecto, enveredando pelo doom).
Definitivamente, há algo de especial em Quebec, Montreal. A quantidade de bandas e projectos realmente únicos e interessantes a sair de lá é impressionante (Olá? Menace Ruine?).
A primeira e a última faixas são essencialmente peças mais ambientais. A primeira, com um discurso (aparentemente de um padre?), sinos, passagem acústicas, samples. A última inclui uma peça de piano tão creepy quanto encantadora. Não são músicas atiradas para lá ao acaso, são cuidadas, e muito boas. A única música realmente black metal, Rituel incantatoire du grimoire du sorcier, é...genial. Um projecto a descobrir a fundo durante o próximo ano.

2. Furia - Płoń

Conheci a banda polaca com este EP e andou a tocar (e ainda toca) aqui dezenas de vezes. São 15 minutos de tanta qualidade que pensei seriamente em inclui-lo na lista de melhores lançamentos do ano. Excelente Black Metal, tem momentos que me recordam o melhor de Negura Bunget. Esteve quase para ficar em primeiro lugar.

3. Coffinworm - Great Bringer Of Night

Demo de estreia destes americanos, que está disponível para download aqui. Blackened Sludge? Impressionou-me a mim e a muito boa gente. Tanto que o debut, esperado para Março/Abril, vai sair pela Profound Lore. Está acima de Jesu apenas pelo factor surpresa, que valorizo muito.

4. Jesu - Opiate Sun

Adorei. É dos meus lançamentos preferidos de Jesu. Não há muito mais a dizer, já tinha falado do EP há uns tempos.

5. Ramesses - Baptism Of The Walking Dead

Ainda não ouvi o único full-length da banda, Misanthropic Alchemy (de 2007), mas este EP (e o de 2005, que também andei a ouvir) é fantástico. Com dois dos membros fundadores de Electric Wizard, não havia muito por onde falhar.

6. Auf der Maur - Out Of Our Minds

Depois de ouvir este miminho espero grandes coisas do sucessor do s/t. A Lead Horse é o ponto alto, o raio da música podia ser de uns Black Math Horseman. Muito boa.

The second pick also comes from the United States in the form of a sludge bomb, created by Georgia's Kylesa.
To those who had already listened to their previous records, this one stands as a huge step forward, to those who never heard them - start here. Another cliché advice: listen to it with a good sound system (or headphones). Of course the last statement is true for every album, but I fell that here you might get a wrong, over-linear and simplified impression if you do it with a bad sound system, since one of the greatest things in the album is the interaction between the two (oh yeah) drummers and the production is such that each drum is recorded either on the left or right speaker, making the distinction between them very clear.
But not only of drums lives Static Tension (what a bore that would be), the riffs have also improved and the feeling transpired by both singers is also great, I personally can't get tired of Laura's voice.
Let's simplify this: great album, sticks in your head and it's very hard to get bored with it.
For older comments on it, there are these two by Amplificasom, this one by Zyk (although I have to disagree with him in the criticism to Mastodon's Crack The Skye, more on that later) and this one on ScratchTheSurface.

Releases of the year

This year, instead of writing a list of the best albums of the year, I decided to opt for a different approach. I'll post small references to those albums without any particular order.

The first one will is my latest acquisition, The Unkindness of Crows from Eagle Twin. It is interesting to note that Gentry Densley signs one of the debuts of the year with two different projects in two straight years. It had already been referenced here by Susana and here by Zyk but its worthwhile mentioning again.
For all those with tickets to Roadburn, don’t miss them on the Bat Cave (if I’m not wrong). For the others in Portugal, don’t go there just for Sunn O))), this guys are excellent live performers.

Live shows of 2009

Let's get started with the listing frenzy of the blog and choose which were the best live shows that I've attended in the last year and why.
There were a lot of good ones, the SWR-Fest had excellent shows, but due to lack of willingness to do a huge list I've chosen the ones that gave me a more lasting impression.

In the 6th place appears the release show of Process Of Guilt's Erosion. First of all, we got two of the most exciting projects in Portuguese metal: Process of Guilt and The Firstborn. By itself it is already a great opportunity, but then again, I saw PoG playing with Minsk and ASOL in that year, so why not pick one show with the international bands? Because, even though those were very good showcases for both PoG and their international companions, the Erosion release show had something else, something special.
In that day, they allowed themselves to play the whole cd plus some of the old songs, which might not repeat itself. Besides that, to be demolished by the song 'abandon' without having listened to it on cd (as it was the case back then) was an incredible experience.

The 5th in the list goes to the one that was probably the most beautiful of the six. I'm talking about the performance that Earth gave in Porto this year. Considering the amount of shows that Amplificasom provided in their first three years of existence, it is not by chance that this was one of the most mentioned by fans when asked which had been better. Being in an old movie theater, it enabled the audience to be seated, just like it is most appropriate when considering the music played by Dylan Carson and his bandmates. The acoustic of the place was downright perfect and made for an unforgettable night.

Number 4 goes to a SWR-Fest show, namely Esoteric. Considering all the names on the list, this is the one I would least expect to have here, but credit where credit is due, it was one of the most intense live performances I've ever witnessed, and that is worth a lot to me. The British doom legends gave one of the best performances of the festival (the others being Year Of No Light, Grey Daturas and Akercocke) but that is not the main reason.
I already enjoy Esoteric on album, but the intensity jump from studio to a live environment was, at least on this show, absolutely astonishing. It was not a performance with plenty of communication with the crowd or anything like that, they just came and delivered one heck of a performance and that was one of the key factors, it was clear (and they pressed on that point in the interview we did after the show) that once they start to play, they are in a completely different place. When one embraces its own creation with such strength and commitment and when that creation is by itself one of the most interesting doom acts on earth, that's something worthwhile checking live.

The most important live event of the year comes in third place. The reason being that, although of a tremendous importance in the path of the band in question (that being, as you might have guessed, Ulver), it did not reached the excellence levels the last two ones did. The reason it's simple: they had not played live in something like 15 years and when they did it was black metal formation, from which, if I'm not mistaken, only one member is still there (Garm). Still, the somewhat simple fact that they decided to take that step and bring those master-pieces to a live environment is amazing and probably a sign of greater things to come, as I'll have the opportunity to judge by myself on the 12th of February.

Moving on, there is one show that I could not leave out of this and that is the return of Faith No More to Portugal. The same had happened with at least two other bands, whom I didn't think I would ever see live, such as Alice in Chains and Rage Against the Machine. Even if they are not on the shape they used to be some years ago, it was still an excellent show and they once again proved why they were one of the most important bands on the rock scene of their era. Plus, Patton is one hell of a frontman and it was very interesting to see him with Fantomas and Faith No More in the same year. Result: amazing voice and very entertaining.

The loudest show of the year, even with earplugs! Sunn O))) with Eagle Twin, performing in Utrecht was just something else and had to be first. By now, their shows move a bit away from a standard show, as they've mastered a lot of unique features to give their performances two things: something that distinguishes them from other bands and something that distinguishes their live performances from their albums, acting on a complement to them in a way. This one had the greatness of having two extra gentleman aboard, Earth's keyboard player Steve Moore and Mayhem's singer Attila Csihar (the second one specially, was a performance by itself). If, to all this, we add the fact that Monoliths and Dimensions is one of the most original albuns to come out in the last decade, we get a memorable show.

Anaal Nathrakh - 'In The Constelation Of The Black Widow' (2009)

Em Setembro os Anaal Nathrakh vieram a Portugal pela primeira vez e, como se não fosse nada, deram O concerto do Caos Emergente. Durante o mesmo tocaram algumas faixas deste novo álbum que me despertaram a atenção (na altura ainda não tinha ouvido).
Ora, peguei nele ontem e, bem, they are pissed. Os berros do Dave Hunt estão cada vez mais alucinados, variados e, bolas, assustadores, contrastando com os apontamentos limpos kinda operatic-style. Em termos instrumentais, também é um registo onde o Kenney se mostra particularmente inspirado, os riffs são brutos mas ficam no ouvido. Aliás, tenho quase a certeza que tocaram no caos a More Of Fire Than Blood, porque mal ouvi aquela melodia inicial reconheci imediatamente a música, e eu costumo ser uma nódoa a lembrar-me destas coisas. No geral, é dos discos mais brutos e ao mesmo tempo mais equilibrados da banda, e arrisca-se a tornar-se dos meus preferidos. Por enquanto, tem sido das minhas primeiras escolhas para os dias pré-natal, ao lado do Agorapocalypse (ANb), e já ganhou um lugar no top do ano.

Quando vi o Without Sinking (2009) no primeiro lugar do top do SOMA, e após uma busca rápida pelo nome da menina, fiquei curiosa e com alguma expectativa, mas não esperava que fosse tão bom. Lá fora está feio e frio, típico domingo. E Without Sinking é a banda sonora perfeita.

Provavelmente já sabem que os Agalloch vão dar dois concertos na Roménia, dias 20 e 21 de Março, sendo que numa das datas vai juntar-se a eles Neige, para o primeiro concerto ao vivo de ALCEST. Entretanto perguntei ao Aesop (baterista de Agalloch e Ludicra) se iam dar mais concertos pela Europa nessa altura e a resposta foi negativa: ele tem uma tour americana com os Ludicra, e o segundo guitarrista, Don, que é professor, tem de voltar às aulas.

Portanto, quem quiser ver Agalloch é melhor começar a procurar vôos para a Roménia. Eu vou continuar a olhar fixamente para o bilhete do Roadburn para não ter ideias.

The Ruins Of Beverast é Alexander von Meilenwald, que talvez alguns conheçam de Nagelfar. Acompanho a banda há pouco mais de três anos, altura em que ouvi pela primeira vez a demo e os dois álbuns que já tinha lançado até então. Não é música fácil e, à excepção do último álbum (Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite, que saiu em setembro e melhorou consideravelmente em termos de produção), todo o seu trabalho é de uma densidade tal que, não estando "disponível" para a música, se pode tornar de difícil digestão (considero-o os "meus" Across Tundras do black metal - por alguma razão adorei à primeira mas compreendo que possa ser difícil de absorver). Apesar de ainda me estar a habituar ao novo som cristalino (está a ser mais difícil que com Drudkh), já me rendi parcialmente. Para quem não conhecer, aqui fica a primeira faixa do novo álbum, que entrou logo à primeira audição para a lista de músicas mais épicas que este senhor alguma vez compôs:

Os Muse são o primeiro nome confirmado para o Rock in Rio - Lisboa 2010. No concerto de domingo no Pavilhão Atlântico, a banda já havia prometido o seu regresso a Portugal no próximo ano. O Rock in Rio-Lisboa volta ao Parque da Bela Vista nos dias 21, 22, 27, 28 e 29 de Maio de 2010.

Passados uns bons dias desde o Acto I (e único) do Prayer Fest, ficou-me um sabor algo amargo na boca. Não pelo que se passou no próprio dia, porque no cômputo geral foi uma noite positiva (o João confirma o meu entusiasmo durante Black Sun), mas porque uma das bandas do cartaz que mais queria ver (em parte por nunca ter visto) tocava no Acto II, Tombs, que como se sabe foi cancelado. De qualquer forma, e tentando não pensar muito nisso (o cartaz escarrapachado ali em cima não ajuda), já vai sendo altura de escrever qualquer coisinha sobre os concertos.

A noite começou tarde, por volta das 20h (atraso esse que viria a verificar-se desastroso), com os Altar of Plagues. A sala compôs-se rapidamente mas deu logo para perceber que não ia encher, o que é uma pena dada a qualidade do cartaz (eu juro que pagava 10€ por CADA banda). Não conhecia a A.R.M.S. e a primeira impressão da sala foi positiva, tanto em termos de tamanho/palco como do som (que entretanto se veio a deteriorar) - mal sabia eu que estava a chover lá dentro... Dos Altar of Plagues só conheço o seu último registo - White Tomb -, do qual julgo que tocaram 2 ou 3 faixas. Gostei bastante do concerto (tiveram uns azares com as cordas das guitarras, mas nada que prejudicasse por aí além a sua prestação), o ambiente soturno criado com a ausência de luzes resultou muito bem, mas penso que os virei a apreciar melhor quando os vir sem ser a abrir as hostes (o público estava muito morninho).

De seguida vinha a segunda melhor banda do Barroselas 2008 (a seguir a Enslaved (: ), Black Sun. Não é a primeira vez que o digo, e volto a repetir: se um dia alguém me assaltar enquanto estiver a ouvir Black Sun essa pessoa será recebida com um soco. São feios, são crus, são espectaculares. Uma banda que me recorda o melhor dos primórdios de Swans - mas que consegue ter a sua própria identidade - só pode ser recebida com entusiasmo (e alguma histeria) por estes lados. Não fosse a minha viagem a madrid 9 dias depois e teria ido a Braga para os ver também no Bracara. O concerto começou de forma algo esquisita, com as luzes acesas e dando um aspecto de ensaio à coisa - não tão mau como em Yacopsae, mas quase lá - , no entanto demorou pouco até o som demolidor me fazer ignorar tudo em volta (entretanto lá apagaram as luzes). Passearam-se por quase toda a discografia, incluindo a nova música, Warhead, para fechar. O ponto alto foi para mim a Krokodil, que me provocou bastantes dores de pescoço no dia seguinte. No final houve várias pessoas a gritar por Disintegrate to Khrist, que não tocaram, mas não tiveram sorte. Ficou de fora. Apesar de adorar a música a um nível talvez pouco saudável, gostei que não a tivessem tocado. Black Sun não é para hinos. Black Sun não é para gostar e sing along. Remember, You Won't Like It. Concerto da noite, dos melhores do ano.

Após Black Sun a minha vontade era de ir para casa, não fosse ainda faltarem tocar dois "pesos pesados". Embora durante a tour os ASOL tenham sido headliners, a pedido do Pedro Mendes quem iria fechar a noite eram os Minsk, e portanto agora era a vez de A Storm of Light. Ainda antes de a banda começar a tocar vieram os problemas. O Josh parecia muito mal disposto, e pior ficou quando um dos pedais deu o berro. Depois de muitas tentativas, bateu com ele no chão, voltou para o backstage durante uns minutos e quando voltou não tinha melhor cara. O concerto começou e o som estava consideravelmente pior do que em AoP e Black Sun. Os feedbacks da guitarra do Josh estavam desastrosos, este eventualmente deu um pontapé na sua coluna e ao fim de quatro músicas deram por terminado o concerto. Não tenho a certeza, mas quase que posso jurar que tocaram menos tempo que Black Sun. Até gostei de ouvir as músicas mais recentes, mas o ambiente em cima do palco estava tão pesado (no mau sentido), que não consegui apreciar o concerto por aí além.

O concerto de Minsk no Transmission deve ter ficado na memória de todos quanto compareceram, e portanto ter a oportunidade de os rever (ou não perder uma segunda vez) em tão pouco tempo só podia ser uma bênção. Infelizmente, mais problemas antes do concerto que provocaram atrasos e pioraram o som: duas das colunas de palco deixaram de funcionar, deixando apenas uma intacta. O som não estava o melhor, mas o concerto prometia. The Shore Of Trancendence, White Wings (? a precisar de confirmação, a minha memória é mázinha), Three Moons. Entretanto no meio do headbang levo com uma baqueta no ombro (que posteriormente foi devidamente assinada). No final da Three Moons chamam o Parker ao backstage e ele volta com a notícia de que a polícia está lá e vão ter de terminar o concerto. Apesar da vontade do resto da banda em continuar - o Tony começou inclusive a tocar a bateria da genial Embers - e o público também, o Parker lá tem o bom senso de não ceder. E acaba assim o concerto de Minsk, tal coito interrompido. Ainda hoje estou meia aparvalhada com o sucedido, apesar de me ter chegado a passar pela cabeça essa possibilidade ao longo da noite (devido aos atrasos e ao facto de a A.R.M.S. se situar numa zona residencial).

Como disse anteriormente, o saldo da noite foi positivo. Infelizmente, o que podia ter sido uma noite única (o cartaz era fantástico!) acabou por ser só boa, com um final terrível e uma sensação de enorme potencial que se perdeu com todas as adversidades da sala (chuva), atrasos, equipamento a falhar, etc. Espero sinceramente que, apesar de tudo, a Ritual Som esteja aí para ficar. Lisboa (e arredores) precisam de pessoas como o Pedro.

Curiosamente, bem longe de 2009, Jug Fulla Sun (1999) é o disco que mais vezes tem estado na minha cabeça. É o primeiro álbum dos Spirit Caravan, e o meu preferido.
Não sei se pelo pouco tempo de vida, é das bandas do Wino mais injustamente ignoradas. Criada depois do fim dos The Obsessed, com David Shermann e Gary Isomm, foi uma banda importantíssima para ele: "Weinrich credits them for encouraging him to join the band and become active musically again, after he had abandoned his music career.".
Sinceramente, quando me apetece ouvir doom/stoner à antiga viro-me quase sempre para esta banda. É impossível não adorar a voz do Wino e os riffs... os riffs são do melhor que encontram por aí. É um disco essencial para fans de Black Sabbath. Aliás, para qualquer fan de doom.

Avançando dez anos e mudando radicalmente de género, temos o Till Makabert Väsen (2009), dos suecos Bergraven.
Estava para ouvir o álbum desde Julho, mas por alguma razão fui adiando a escuta até há poucos dias - foram quatro meses para ouvir e uma noite para ficar apanhadinha.
Mal começa sente-se logo a aura de estranheza e experimentalismo dos Ved Buens Ende/Virus do nosso amigo Carlos Miguel, adicionando às melodias de guitarra mais estranhas do planeta e às sempre audíveis linhas de baixo uma voz alucinada a cantar em sueco.
Por falar em coisas alucinadas, que riff é aquele no início da quarta faixa, Hunger? Sério candidato a melhor do ano, desde que ouvi esta música que a tenho na cabeça.
Para ser sincera, poucas são as vezes em que temos aqui "black metal", e portanto torna-se um pouco difícil de catalogar (tal como é difícil catalogar bandas como Ved Buens Ende e Virus). "Post"-Black Metal / Avant-garde metal? De qualquer das formas, eu recomendaria ouvirem o álbum antes de começarem a fazer listinhas de melhores do ano, porque é bem possível que sejam obrigados a colocar lá este mimo. E em lugares altos. (Já agora, e para - talvez - aguçar mais a curiosidade, o disco saiu pela Hydra Head)

Depois das covers fantásticas de Solitude (Black Sabbath) e Thieves In The Temple (Prince), Garm e companhia presentearam-nos com mais um mimo: Another Brick In The Wall Part 1 (cortesia do blog ETS). Muito curta, demasiado curta. Mas são 3:22 de puro génio.

Por falar em Ulver, no concerto de Lillehammer houve pessoas a tirar nabos da púcara: 'Garm mentioned that there were two Ulver releases due out soon. 1) is a split with Sunn O))) and 2) is a cover album which they have talked about doing for quite some time now.'

Progressive Nation Tour 2009

Na quinta-feira dia 22 de Outubro, foi dia de festejar o prog no Palácio de Cristal, no Porto. Festival organizado pelos cabeças de cartaz Dream Theater, contou com as excelentes presenças de Opeth, Bigelf e Unexpect.

Por volta das 17:00 já se começava a ver uma certa movimentação negra em direcção aos belos jardins do Palácio, tanto de miúdos como de graúdos, prontos para abanar a cabecinha enquanto se babavam com as habilidades técnicas da gente que por ali iria desfilar mais tarde.

E que grande festival que passou pelo pavilhão Rosa Mota!

Mas, como de costume, nem tudo foi um mar de rosas. Apesar do som do soundcheck que chegava às pouco limpas casas de banho ser bastante promissor, tal não se verificou em geral durante o evento. E, claro, os mais prejudicados foram os primeiros, os Unexpect. É incrível como num festival deste calibre, com bandas que exigem não menos que um bom trabalho da parte dos técnicos de som, se pode passar um concerto de 30-45minutos em que a amplificação da bateria era simplesmente inexistente! Ok, a partir de meio lá se começaram a ouvir os pratos e de vez em quando um timbalão; mas a sério, que raio é que se passou? O que vale é que estes senhores de um folk-prog-avant-garde-whatever bastante contagiante souberam muito bem como minimizar estes “detalhes” dos ouvidos do público, puxando bastante pela parte visual e motora. Não os conhecia e fiquei muito bem impressionado com a capacidade que tiveram de aguentar algo em tão más condições. Já agora, aproveito para deixar já aqui que outro dos flagelos foi o som dos baixos de qualquer uma das bandas presentes. Mais uma vez, com Unexpect a serem os mais prejudicados. Para quê um baixo imponente de 9 cordas quando tudo aquilo que se ouve é apenas um hum distante e grave, com 90% das notas indistinguíveis? Deu pena.

Depois da irreverência jovial, chegou a vez do poder e sabedoria da velha guarda, bastante bem representada pelos Bigelf. Já sabia mais ou menos com o que contar em termos musicais, mas fiquei surpreendido pela positiva pelo humor e boa disposição mostrados principalmente pelo vocalista. Desde o começo com a Marcha Imperial cantada por muitos meninos presentes – boas pessoas, só pode! –, até ao final, passando por uns comentários do género: “Did you just say ‘fuck you’ ? Well ‘fuck you’ you too! Nah, I’m just kidding. Seems like this prog business is too serious sometimes”, deu para curtir um excelente som à la Zep+Black Sabbath+solos Pink Floydianos com um ambiente leve e já a sentir uma qualidade musical extraordinária. Aqui, felizmente, já se ouvia a bateria em condições, apesar do baixo continuar distante e completamente dominado pela guitarra.

No final de Bigelf já se começava a sentir uma onda de ansiedade e entusiasmo no ar. Finalmente muita gente ia ter a oportunidade de ver Opeth pela primeira vez (como foi o meu caso) e outros de matar saudades com um concerto que viria a ser o mais brutal da noite. Voltou a musiquinha de fundo e com a plateia do pavilhão praticamente cheia, os corações já estavam a bater bem rápido quando tudo se desligou para ficarem apenas umas ténues luzes roxas/violeta no palco, num ambiente muito soturno e com sons drone indianos acompanhados por uma espécie de Coil instrumental que, do sítio onde eu estava, não deu para ouvir de tão insanos que já eram os berros a chamar por Opeth e as palmas que os fãs batiam.

Foi com esta loucura que se rebentaram muitos tímpanos com um som claro como cristal do início da Heir Apparent, que levou logo ao aparecimento dos primeiros gritos e gestos coordenados, dando mais força ainda ao concerto da noite. Honestamente nem sei muito o que apontar aos Opeth e a sua excelente performance. O que é que os faz tão grandes em palco? Será a sua capacidade técnica fora do normal, o boa disposição e humildade, as músicas em si que são grandes composições invejáveis ou uma legião de pessoas que, embora não sejam muitos, dão tudo o que têm e não têm para que os Opeth fiquem com saudades de tocar em Portugal? No meio disto tudo, as memórias misturam-se entre cabeçadas involuntárias em algumas pessoas, saltos meio dançantes durante a The Lotus Eaters, mãos a acompanhar os ritmos finais da Reverie/Harlequin Forest como se a música fluísse pelo corpo, lágriminhas no canto do olho com Windowpane e Deliverance e sorrisos rasgados durante Hex Omega. Desde o início, desde aquele primeiro acorde brutal, que o concerto passou como se nada fosse. Foram 60minutos sem erros, sem medos, sem vergonha. Mikael Akerfeldt ainda nos proporcionou umas belas piadolas do costume, chegando a ficar sem palhetas a meio do concerto, tal não era a sua felicidade a distribuí-las pelo público sedento de mais e mais Opeth. “And now we’re gonna play another calm song. This one is about a woman’s ass.” Risos. Uma nota tocada repetidamente. Pessoas intrigadas sem saber o que lhes ia cair em cima. Deliverance.

Quanto a Dream Theater, deixo já aqui bem claro que era um fã até eles terem lançado o Octavarium. O Scenes From A Memory e o Train of Thought são dois álbuns que muito me influenciaram e continuam a entreter-me como se os ouvisse pela primeira vez. O problema é que os senhores DT agora em vez de grandes sets com todos os clássicos, preferem tocar hora e meia de músicas novas e baladas. Ok, ok, tocaram a The Dance of Eternity e a Honor Thy Father, mas por favor, onde está a alma?! Custou-me imenso vê-los todos felizes com as coisas novas e a tocarem estas duas como se nada fosse. Não posso também deixar passar o facto de ter achado que o Mike Portnoy fez uma clara medíocre prestação. Parecia estar mais concentrado em cuspir escarretas monumentais, visíveis a dezenas de metros de distância, para cima da colecção de amplificadores do John Petrucci ou a tocar de pé, do que em brindar-nos com um aproveitamento decente da sua (demasiado) grande bateria. Fiquei, porém surpreendido pela positiva com uma coisa: a voz de laBrie estava muito, mas muito bem. Para além de praticamente não desafinar, estava em forma e com uma óptima presença em palco. O mesmo já não se pode dizer do som do baixo, que, voltando aos problemas iniciais, estava completamente difuso no meio de uma certa salganhada de efeitos e processamento dos outros instrumentos, sendo apenas possível compreender que notas choviam do MusicMan de Myung quando este punha distorção ou quando ia para sons mais agudos. Pior ainda, foi não perceber que raio é que os DT andam a comer para permitirem que o som da bateria esteja mal feito. Já acho meio parvo andarem com uma coisa tão grande atrás, mas é incontornavelmente mais esquisito não se preocuparem em ter o melhor som. As memórias que tenho do concerto de Dream Theater prendem-se infelizmente com o som avassalador que cada toque nos bombos principais fazia. Para além do que era suposto ouvir, os graves cresciam de tal maneira naquela sala que, muitas vezes, escondiam os solos de guitarra… Incrível, não é?

Resumindo, foi um cartaz que conseguiu reunir prog mais irreverente com as coisas mais clássicas, pesadas ou virtuosas sem que o tempo de actuação afectasse verdadeiramente o aproveitamento de cada. Unexpect foi uma surpresa agradável e divertida, Bigelf psicadélico e muito estiloso, Opeth demolidor e sincero, Dream Theater bom para os fãs das coisas mais recentes, entertaining mas pouco estimulante.

Uma nota muito negativa para o som geral, em especial, mais uma vez, para o que aconteceu durante Unexpect (vergonhoso). É verdade que a sala é alta e tal, mas estamos a falar de bandas altamente profissionais em estúdio e que é suposto dominarem todos estes aspectos.

Mesmo com todos os inconvenientes, foi um dia altamente positivo e o concerto de Opeth e a companhia da Mina durante a noite valeram cada euro gasto.

3 Anos de Amplificasom

É verdade, a Amplificasom, das promotoras mais importantes, não do Porto, mas do País, comemora hoje três anos - já passaram três anos desde o concerto dos Enablers no O Meu Mercedes! Aproveitámos a ocasião para fazer lhes fazer umas perguntinhas.

1. Durante uns meses foram “apenas” um blog de música. Estava nos vossos planos vir a organizar concertos?
O blog e a promotora eram para ser coisas separadas. Eu e o Jorge começamos o blog por brincadeira (basta ver o primeiro post), mas assim que se conseguiu confirmar os Enablers e começamos à procura dum nome para a organização chegamos à conclusão que deveria ficar o mesmo. Ainda bem. Foi o Jorge que mais insistiu nessa situação e estou-lhe grato, hoje o blog é o nosso melhor veículo de promoção.

2. Quando e como é que surgiu a oportunidade de trazerem cá os Enablers? Como é que correu essa primeira experiência?
Trazer cá as bandas que mais queria ver ao vivo começou por ser um objectivo a partir do momento em que reparava que as mesmas, em plena tour, davam a volta constantemente em Madrid ou Barcelona. Foi aí que decidi mexer-me, só pelo prazer de ver as minhas bandas preferidas. Quando contei ao Jorge que me ia atirar ele ficou tão entusiasmado como eu e basicamente começou assim. Supostamente deveria ter acontecido em Abril do mesmo ano, mas independentemente disso o resultado seria o mesmo: tivemos um prejuízo “jeitoso” mas uma bela estreia, foi um grande concerto. Citando o Joe Goldring: “it was a learning experience”.

3. O concerto seguinte aconteceu só seis meses depois, mas a partir daí começaram a trazer cada vez mais e melhores bandas à cidade do Porto. Há alguma razão para o interregno, queriam avançar com calma?
Não houve nenhuma razão em especial, apenas queríamos e queremos organizar aquilo que gostamos. Hoje é normal organizarmos vários concertos por ano pois tanto as bandas como os agentes procuram-nos mais e confiam em nós, já não somos só nós a entrar em contacto. Isto acaba por funcionar como uma bola de neve, se fazes um bom trabalho a mensagem vai passando.

4. Algum de vocês tinha experiência de organização de eventos antes de começarem a organizar concertos? Qual foi o momento mais díficil que passaram durante um concerto?
Nenhuma, Enablers foi mesmo a primeira vez. Nunca passamos por nenhum momento difícil mas stress, imprevistos e complicações em dias de concertos é bastante normal. Temos algumas “histórinhas” que um dia talvez divulguemos…

5. A partir de que altura é que começaram a ser também uma “booking agency”? *
Mais uma vez, surgiu da vontade de ter cá as bandas. Se sabes que uma tour não passa de França mas queres a banda cá então ofereces-te para marcares várias datas pelo caminho. As coisas até hoje correram bem, bandas e agentes procuram-nos e inclusive alguns até preferem deixar Portugal e Espanha ao meu cuidado.

6. Qual é, até ao momento, a banda de que mais se orgulham de ter trazido cá?
Todas, acredita que não é cliché. Quem me conhece sabe que os Isis sempre foram um sonho e está prestes a acontecer, mas tanto eu como o Jorge orgulhamo-nos de cada noite Amplificasom. Temos tido concertos memoráveis, temos conhecido malta incrível, temos feito amigos… Tem valido a pena, muito.

7. Passando agora por um assunto menos agradável. Como é que ficaram as coisas com a SPA? Foi algo de muito estranho.
Não foi estranho, foi surreal. A partir desse dia chegaram-me aos ouvidos situações incríveis criadas pela SPA. É incrível como é que eles têm permissão do Estado para fazerem o que fazem. Compreendo o conceito, mas nunca nestes moldes nem neste ciclo vicioso em que está inserido.

8. Manifestaram o desejo de vir a criar uma “Amplificasom Records”. Já houve algum avanço ou ainda é apenas uma ideia? Há alguma banda em especial com a qual gostassem de trabalhar?
É uma ideia que pode acontecer dum momento para o outro, é só preciso tempo. E, tal como os concertos, a acontecer seria para editarmos aquilo que gostamos.

9. Neste final de ano, a quantidade de nomes que estão a trazer é verdadeiramente impressionante, acham que vão conseguir manter este nível no próximo ano?
Obrigado! A maior parte do público não reconhece o trabalho dum promotor/ agente, não faz a mínima de todo o processo que proporcionou determinado concerto, por isso é porreiro que tenhas essa noção. Não estamos preocupados com isso, a Amplificasom pode até acabar depois do fim-de-semana com os Isis. Não temos um plano, não temos nenhum objectivo a não ser continuarmo-nos a divertir se bem que a Amp é um hobbie bastante sério. Enquanto curtirmos isto, enquanto a malta do Porto (são poucos mas do melhor que há em termos de público) nos continuar a apoiar então é para continuar.

10. Ultimamente têm tido um convidado mensal no blog, como tem corrido a experiência?
Temos tido vários e tem corrido bem. Sabes, o blog continua a ter o mesmo objectivo desde que foi criado: divertirmo-nos. É verdade que hoje temos cerca de 1000 pessoas a visitar-nos por dia, mas continua a ser o “tasco” onde escrevemos sobre o que queremos, nada mais.

11. Que bandas planeiam trazer cá num futuro próximo? Alguma novidade que queiram dar agora?
Já se trabalha em 2010 desde há uns meses. Temos alguns concertos praticamente confirmados, mas antes de Isis não divulgaremos nada :).

12. Qual seria A banda/tour que a Amplificasom traria a Portugal se tivessem recursos para tal?
Susana, não imaginas a quantidade de ideias que temos, não imaginas a quantidade de vezes que tivemos que desistir por falta de recursos. Se dependesse de nós, por esta altura teríamos o dobro dos concertos, mas como sabes a Amplificasom não tem qualquer apoio, fundo ou patrocínio. Tudo o que vês é o trabalho, empenho e dedicação de dois amigos que vão mantendo isto de forma balanceada. Orgulhámo-nos do que já fizemos até hoje e orgulhámo-nos de sermos independentes, mas sabemos que temos limites. Mas o que interessa é que trazemos quem queremos a onde queremos e sempre com o mesmo objectivo: ter o prazer de ver e ouvir a banda ao vivo, não há melhor…

Pod People - Mons Animae Mortuorum (2008)

Pod People are a stoner/doom band coming from Australia. The focus of this text will be on their latest album - Mons Animae Mortuorum (2008). Before this, they released three EP another full length and a split with Daredevil.
The first impression that one has of back to reality (first song of the album) is that this is a doom album with some stoner average riffs and death growls. That lasts until the chorus, where the band first introduces a different vocal approach, a more melodic one if melodic could be applied here.
So, all in all, this could be described as somewhere between stoner, sludge and doom, with some growls here and there. The riffs are very catchy and build up nicely even if they're not brilliant. I haven't been able to get the full lyrics but they're apparently about the Divine Comedy. It's clear that the band has the ability of creating some enjoyable and crushing songs. The vocal dynamics presented here, ranging from those deep gutural sounds hailing from their doom rots to a more clean approach, is definitely on of the most interesting points in Mons Animae Mortuorum.
To make the point I made about the riffs clearer, listen to the slow paced beginning of 'Neanderthal': there is nothing particularly new taking place, no revolution, but it sounds cool. It's good music for those who appreciate the style (another example would be the very entertaining 'Two Eyes Bleeding').
Still, I think a warning should be made: if you are looking for something to enlarge your musical horizons, a brave new world of experimentation or something that might make you feel deeply challenged or uncomfortable, then this is not the album you're looking for. But if you're looking for some nice stoner doom riffs with some very well executed choruses that can be glued to your brains for days, then this is a very good choice.
Thus, I stand very curious to see where are they going next. For now, this has that extra bonus point of not getting tiring after a few times.

O radialista António Sérgio faleceu na noite de sábado, vítima de um problema cardíaco, aos 59 anos, das quais mais de 40 anos foram ao serviço da rádio, disse à Agência Lusa Luis Montez, dono da Rádio Radar.

António Sérgio fazia actualmente o programa "Viriato 25" da rádio Radar, tendo inclusivamente estado em estúdio a gravar o programa da próxima semana, que será posto no ar tal como previsto, garantiu Luís Montez.

O dono da Radar qualificou António Sérgio como "um mestre da rádio, uma referência" ou o "John Peel português". Montez afirmou que o radialista era um exemplo de trabalho e dedicação e "estava sempre preocupado com os ouvintes".

Larvas e Inundações

Para começar hoje temos um texto que tinha colocado noutro lado, mas que achei por bem removê-lo desse lugar e colocá-lo aqui, pois o Erode é que merece tal recomendação:

Comprei esta demo há umas semanas à Perpetuam mas só hoje tive oportunidade e me lembrei de colocar a cassete na aparelhagem.

Honestamente, já estive mais virado para coisas maradas e noisianas, mas a verdade é que à partida já esperava algo de bom vindo de Larva, uma vez que sou um apreciador de praticamente tudo o que conheço que tenha o toque do Fausto, sendo que Omitir é definitivamente o projecto dele que mais prazer me dá ouvir e aquele que conheço há mais tempo, sendo composto por um black metal atmosférico, espesso e original, que traz misturado com ele algumas das inúmeras ideias aplicadas nos outros projectos não-metálicos. Mesmo assim, já há algum tempo que andava a acompanhar também Forgotten Winter (como alguém lhes chamou uma vez, os Limbonic Art portugueses), Subúrbios, Vácuo de Outono e claro, Larva, estes três sem qualquer relação com o black metal (embora esta tape de Larva tenha uma faixa interessante que não destoaria muito de uns Frail por exemplo).

Tanto Subúrbios como Larva, parecem apontar para campos mais experimentais, onde a música vagueia por um ambiente com tendências psicadélicas, vanguardistas, todos com uma sonoridade envolvente e peculiar. Rapidamente dá para entender a atenção dada à temática das duas bandas, bastando para isso ver os nomes dados às faixas compostas nos dois projectos, assim como as descrições das bandas em Larva ou até em Vácuo de Outono. Mas de volta à música em si, Larva e Subúrbios encontram-se mais virados para o experimentalismo (seja ele mais focado nas acústicas como em Subúrbios ou nas electrónicas como em Larva), ao contrário de Vácuo de Outono que opta por criar texturas que relembram um escuro bar semi-vazio, onde o whisky e os cigarros são consumidos de modo a fazer esquecer a função dos relógios e onde sórdidas e decadentes memórias são relembradas.

Sendo que Subúrbios se trata de um projecto puramente instrumental, parece-me justo definir Larva como contendo mensagem mais directa ou particular, sujeita a interpretações menos subjectivas. Mesmo assim, a componente experimental não deixa de ser forte, resultando em faixas que roçam por vezes o abstracto ou, no mínimo, o estranho, senão vejamos as faixas desta cassete: Faca Utensílio de Cozinha tem percussão ritualista como pano de fundo, enquanto aquilo que parecem ser uma espécie de cantos fazem aparições efémeras, por entre pontuais murmúrios e fugazes notas de guitarra com um sabor quase árabe. Em Regressão Animal (Telefonia) temos mais uma vez cantos prolongados e distantes, que ecoam em paredes de uma rua deserta, antes de termos uma rapariga dissertando algo, tendo a voz um toque metálico, ao estilo daqueles avisos dados em estações de comboios, seguida por notas ásperas de violino, que conferem à atmosfera um toque de solidão tranquilizante. Na faixa Ramo Morto temos um nível bem mais abstracto do que é presenciado nas outras faixas, dado que os efeitos de distorção e a percussão quasi-industrialista nos remete imediatamente para uma poeirenta e cinzenta fábrica desprovida de actividade à largos anos, onde a tinta estalada, os vidros rachados e as nuas estruturas ferrugentas parecem ser as únicas testemunhas do passar do tempo. A melhor faixa creio ser mesmo Esgoto do Amor, que começa com buzinas intrigantes a darem um início enganador, antes de partir para um riff de guitarra acompanhado por bateria com um estilo quase post-punk, adoptando este estilo, com mais alguns acordes pelo meio, cambaleando até caír por terra ao som de mais efeitos electrónicos.

Por acaso também já era fã da Perpetuam, antes de saber que iria lançar algo de Larva, uma vez que foi esta Perpetuam que decidiu relançar coisas antigas de Profan (essa excelente banda de doom com variadíssimas atmosferas que ainda vai dar muito que falar), assim como a primeira tape de Alex Moore (drone barulhento muito interessante) e de Order of the Light (dark ambient que em certas alturas me faz lembrar secções acústicas de Bosque), pelo que ainda mais interessado por isto fiquei. A verdade é que foi uma surpresa muito positiva e posso dizer que esta cassete tem uma sonoridade muito cativante para quem gosta deste género de coisas e a banda vem a ser mais uma grande adição para o rol de bandas portuguesas que têm apresentado sonoridades que roçam o ambient,noise ou experimental como Amphytalamus, Musgo, Morte por Mil Cortes e Monomoy, entre outras já referidas. Aqui por estes lados, está aprovadíssimo!

E agora espaço para algo muito, muito diferente de Larva. Após a decadência urbanística e podridão modernista de Larva, vemo-nos confrontados com uma inundação sob a forma de som. A história começa comigo a ir à FNAC do Chiado e a trazer de lá um CD de Asva e Aethenor, não sei antes "tropeçar" neste álbum que me prendeu pela sua capa algo intrigante. Embora não desse para ouvir este álbum através daqueles aparelhos em que basta colocar o código de barras nos infravermelhos para ouvir samples das faixas, fico a pesar-me a consciência e passei o resto do dia a pensar nele, até que cheguei a casa e optei pelo método condenável de descarregar o álbum de algum blogspot manhoso. Acontece que desde que ouvi este álbum, só penso em arranjar tempo para voltar à FNAC e rezar para que ninguém o tenha levado entretanto. Native é basicamente um trabalho que gira todo ele à volta da água, como se pode perceber pelos nomes das faixas e da própria banda. O trabalho saíu pela Meteor City, uma label conhecida por ser a rampa de lançamento para diversificadas bandas de stoner rock e quejandos e Flood é uma banda que apesar de não ser puro stoner rock, contém bastante desta sonoridade. Mas na verdade Flood aparenta ser um projecto muito mais abrangente, dado que este álbum de estreia e único trabalho até agora, é um portentoso CD que mete sludge, doom e stoner numa batedeira e o resultado fica à vista de todos como uma sonoridade familiar mas muito variada, onde se pode encontrar rockeiradas à Mastodon, uma doomzada no estilo mais tradicional quase Candlemassiano, divagações pedradas e fumarentas como os Electric Wizard gostam de fazer e sobrando ainda espaço para me lembrarem do estilho porcalhão mas com atitude dos Men Eater da fase Hellstone. Grande mistela, particularmente bem organizada, através de 4 longas faixas principalmente instrumentais, de qualidade extrema e que me faz questionar o porquê de não ter ouvido falar deles antes. Imaginem o Alabama, Louisiana e Texas com o chão a abrir-se mas em vez de saír magma das fendas, o que brota é água, uma água castanha, que sobe palmos de altura em segundos, até entrar pelas janelas das casas, chegando rapidíssimo ao tecto, cobrindo os bêbados e ressacados adormecidos nos alpendres a torrar ao sol. Flood é isso mesmo, a banda sonora de uma inundação sulista, banhada por um sol abrasador numa tarde decadente.

Jodis - "Secret House"

Apesar de a primeira audição me ter deixado imediatamente rendida decidi esperar uns dias, umas audições, até escrever qualquer coisa.
Quando coloquei o disco a tocar não fazia grande ideia ao que ia: nunca ouvi a Continents enquanto esteve disponível. Das duas uma: ia gostar e ficar demasiado ansiosa/com expectativas demasiado altas para o resto do disco, ou não ia gostar e quando ele saísse não ia ter muita vontade de ouvir. Não me arrependo nada da decisão, o efeito surpresa foi monstro.

A perfeição com que todos os elementos são introduzidos ao longo das sete faixas é arrepiante. Chama-se Secret House mas bem podia ser Desert House, já que é para o que o álbum me transporta; por vezes até consigo ouvir o eco, sentir o pó a passear-se no ar. Ou talvez Secret House seja o nome correcto, por o disco me fazer encontrar essa tal casa...

Adoro o tom desolador da guitarra, adoro o trabalho de bateria que acrescenta mesmo algo à música, não está “só lá”. Adoro os pequenos sons de fundo, imperceptíveis nas primeiras audições, e a versatilidade da voz. É música minimalista mas tem tantas camadas e tanto para descobrir que é incrível.

Por uma vez, a descrição de um álbum pela editora acerta na mouche: 'as a whole, recalls a void, a shoreless pit, a slow nihilistic descent into absolute blankness...'

Mais um obrigatório este ano.

Sunn O))) + Eagle Twin (20-10-2009, Utrecht)

There is a point that has to be made clear from the beginning: this was not a regular music show. Not in the sense of having the band playing a certain amount of recognizable songs or in the sense of an enjoyable musical event. Credit must be given to Sunn O))) – they are the loudest fuckin’ band I’ve ever seen in my life. They even gave away free ear plugs before the show and it was, still, loud as hell.
But before all of this happened, there was Eagle Twin. It’s not by chance that we have a support act playing one hour and the main act playing for one hour and a half. To have a band such as Eagle Twin to support you is pure luxury. If you ever have to define how to make the heaviest music you can with just one guitar, voice and drum kit, I’m pretty sure that Eagle Twin will be very close to the that definition. The songs were mostly merged together and that combination drone/doom with some Melvins-esque riffing and drumming sounded even better live. When you oscillate between contemplative moods arising from droning slow riffs to frenzy moments of head banging in one single show, then it better be well done. With Eagle Twin you’re pretty much assured to have it all in an amazing fashion.
With the opening act finished, we were drawing closer to what would be a huge end for the night. To have the duo of Anderson and O’Malley playing in their own would have been awesome by itself, but to have them share the stage with names such as Attila Csihar (Mayhem’s singer) and Steve Moore (Earth’s keyboard player) just gives the show an extra dimension.
Another thing that has to be noted is that seeing Sunn play an entire album doesn’t mean that it will be like in the recording (and most likely won’t). If you’ve heard some of their cover songs you will get their idea. What they did was to reinterpret Monoliths & Dimensions in a live environment. Even if some bits obviously stayed the same (the opening lines of Aghartha, the monumental riff of Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia) and the wonderful closing sounds of Alice to name a few), most of the songs would not be straightforwardly recognizable if listened to out of context. As one stood in the crowd and watched things develop (there were absolutely no pauses between the songs), it was clear that the monster forming on stage was an incarnation of the piece called Monoliths and Dimensions, while not necessarily the album one. Attila was given a lot more freedom to do whatever he wanted (or they wanted, doesn’t matter) and that was great.
Visually, a Sunn O))) show is something very intense and well prepared, and what you see and the way you get into it may play a role that is as important as how far can you let yourself drown in those walls of sound produced by the band. Long before the show, smoke was expelled from a machine placed in the middle of the stage, completely covering the air with dense layers of smoke. Not innocently placed, the machine served to cover Attila in a revolving mist every once in a while and he played his role perfectly.
When the sound ceased to come and the lights were turned back on, the round of applause the band received made clear that they had indeed delivered a great performance.

I started listening to Orthodox in their last album, Amanecer en Puerta Oscura and was blown away by the band's unique approach on doom. There was something in those songs that immediately caught my attention. Be those the jazzy drumming, the brass instruments used, the fragile voices and the alternation between more jazzy/moody songs and 'regular' doom songs (be careful with the use of the word 'regular' when it comes to this Spanish trio). The basic idea of having the same riffs in Mesto, rigido e ceremoniale and Part II. Apogueum, but with the second one building one what the first left and turning the epic meter up a notch is already good, but the way they did it, with four songs between them is downright perfect.
Now they are back with another record - Sentencia - composed of only three songs (or should we say one song, an intro and an outro?). The opener, Marcha De La Santa Sangre is a great burial march. The feelings of sadness in this piece is just overwhelmingly well portrayed: the drums repeat and repeat themselves while the guitar and some brass instrument (I can never tell brass instruments apart, could anyone kindly tell me where is that wonderful sound coming from?) take turns playing the lamented theme. This lasts for a few minutes and then the real song of this album starts, the 26 minute long Ascencion.
They go right to one of the things that made them so special for me in the last album - minimalist repetitive noises on top of an overall silent picture, while some free-jazz drums start playing around. It's not easy to do it right but they have managed to accomplish it (yet again). They've also managed to insert a piano melody (a mourn or a lament would be more appropriate words to describe it) that fits in greatly with the slow growth of intensity of the song, climaxing with those previous mentioned fragile voices kicking in amidst the piano tremblings. Things grow, with the drums, double-bass, piano and vocals going back and forth amidst an overall feeling of spirituality, oppression and sadness until they decide it's time to welcome back the silence. Now, Orthodox have become masters in the art of having their moments of silence in the songs and performing dynamic changes. Plugging in some slow and methodical dissection of our ears with a brass sound being accompained by a very distant double bass creates a great contemplative atmosphere.
I could go on to try and describe all the feelings I get from this song but I find it to be too long and probably not worthwhile, since nothing I say can really reflect everything that goes on. At every audition something new sparks to life. It would be perfect if the last two paragraphs already made you want to listen to this album. If not, well, you loose, for this is something really unique and worthwhile checking.
The last thing that puzzled me for a while with this album, was that, even though it is as sad as sad goes, I was always uplifted after hearing the album. For some reason, it brought me joy. Then, as I was reading the same book as last time (Ursula Le Guin - The Dispossessed), a sentence, which I think holds the key to the previous question, flashed before my eyes:

"The music was a more urgent need, a deeper satisfaction, than the companionship."

What this album made, despite all its sadness was to fill my need to feel something from the music I listen to, and it did it like only a few can.

O novo EP de Jesu saiu. Sim, há mais um desde o Infinity; este já é o JK Broadrick que conhecemos, a lançar EPs como se não houvesse amanhã. Confesso que ainda não ouvi o anterior, não queria forçar uma audição de uma faixa de 50 minutos quando não me sentia na disposição correcta, mas hoje olhei para a capa do Opiate Sun e houve qualquer coisa que me atraiu. Passado uns minutos estava a ouvir o disco e nada arrependida. São quatro faixas melancólias e viciantes, perfeitas para os dias que se avizinham. O álbum abre com a música mais directa, Losing Streak, que tem um pormenor de guitarra que não esperava ouvir em Jesu, mas gostei. Lembrei-me de MBV...As quatro músicas têm um ambiente muito "Conqueror", que não sendo o preferido da maioria, sempre foi o mais especial para mim por ter sido o primeiro.
Para quem gosta de Jesu, mesmo quem não apreciou por aí além os últimos splits, vale muito a pena ouvir.

I'll start this random piece of text by a quotation from Ursula K. Le Guin (warning: this is not a demonstration of culture, I was actually reading this book the other day and this text came to my mind after this passage):

"(...) Then I saw . .. you see ...I saw that you can't do anything for anybody. We can't save each other. Or ourselves.
- What have you left, then? Isolation and despair! You're denying brotherhood, Shevek! - the tall girl cried.
- No—no, I'm not. I'm trying to say what I think brotherhood really is. It begins—it begins in shared pain."

And lately, most music that has passed through my hands is just about that. Not just to feel great musicianship or a catchy verse, but to feel something. Not even to relate to the feelings of the writer but to actually experience genuine feelings from the music you are hearing.
And now I'll move into examples. The first one has to be Neurosis. Plug A Sun That Never Sets. When you hear the line "The blood that leads my life is not my own." you have to feel something, and I'm not talking about the lyrics themselves, but about the way they are sung. There's something pretty unique about those voices and the way they are put amidst that great background song, which can explain why they're one of the most copied bands in the world.
Now turn into the latest YOB output, The Great Cessation, one of the best doom albums edited this year so far. What makes it great? In some way it's the same that I said for Neurosis and that would also be true for Process Of Guilt's Abandon (5th song of Erosion) but in a very different fashion. In the song with the album's title, you are surrounded by an elegy in the form of a riff for 5 minutes, just about what's necessary to get you in the mood. The voice comes in quiet whispers, that eventually evolve into that characteristic singing style of Mike (you know what I'm talking about, not quite a melodic singing but indeed a very epic and overwhelming one). And then it stops. You get one of those very slow interludes which transforms itself into one of those huge riffs that can tear down a wall, such is it's grandiosity. It keeps on beating the hell out of your head until the 16th minute of the song, when the non-distorted and very slow lament of the guitars return to haunt you in a very precise, numbing and slow fashion. This dichotomy of slow and sad vs crushing, furious and distorted goes to an even higher pitch in the end of the song (and album) and what's left of the listener is just a shallow being, unable to move itself from its chair, such was the mental beating he received from the speakers.
